Consumerisation has engulfed the businesses like no one else. Apple first came with the idea of these devices based on their success of predecessor iPhone. It was not assumed at that time what future may lead us to. Future of devices is far from over yet but they have just added another star in their present books. Most devices whether Android or smartphones or Tablets have just made the human lives filled with technological changes which keep us surrounded all the time with influx of knowledge, news and happenings from all the plethora of life.
In the past two days I have seen this word BYOD going over the web like crazy for the people that work in enterprise environments. Being an IT person, it does not surprise me but it now about to surpass me for how the enterprise believe it can increase the productivity of the employees. In a reference to this article BBC had quite interesting facts mentioned in their article today but they seem more to me as a gimmick to keep you interested in your job with lots of entertainment toys. I received an email from our CEO saying that we are not saying NO to the personal devices but we will allow them to be used as per the company policies. Simply making us easy to work from wherever we would like to and how we would want to. It is making you more aware of what you can do with your time and it is not too far that I can already see the next thing of future will be BYOO (Bring Your Own Office) which simply means you have your work space just like WFH(Work From Home) enlightened our work habits.
I do not feel quite at home with this BYOD at a moment. The survey(as done by Cisco) shows that “We found globally that 40% of college students and 45% of employees would accept a lower paying job with a choice of device” It is more about killing your worth by letting you spend more time working or socializing on your devices without knowing your own next desk colleague.
I saw it booming with the consumer markets. I saw them in the train, tube or on the streets of London which now will even walk into the lives of workspace letting us feel like total invaders. I find these devices more of toys than the real work machines. Companies are embracing this as a new step towards global consumerisation but I am not personally seeing this as a very productive move. You cannot ask the employees to join them for less pay if they bring their own devices. Interesting enough, I would want to hear your opinion on this.
